If you have Oamaru stone cladding you may not be aware that it requires sealing every 7 to 12 years for protection. Here are some tips for looking after your Oamaru stone:
Test for Resealing
Spray water on the surface. If the water beads up into droplets, the water repellent is still effective. If water absorbs into the stone and the surface darkens, it's time for a reseal. Another sign that sealing is needed, is the growth of mould, moss or lichen.
Trim Plants
Keep plants, shrubs, and vegetation at least 300 mm away from the stone to prevent water from getting in. This also reduces the chance of moss, mould, and lichen growth.
Cleaning Process
Apply Moss & Mould Killer by thoroughly wetting the surface with the product. Once the moss/mould killer has taken effect, scrub with a brush or broom. In areas with heavy build-up, a wire brush may be needed. Do not use a water blaster as this can damage the stone and the loosen pointing.
Repeat Treatment
After cleaning, let the stone dry. Apply a second round of Moss & Mould Killer if needed.
Repair Work
Once cleaned, address any repairs, such as loose pointing.
Sealing
When the stone is completely dry, apply Homecare Silicone Masonry Sealer to protect it from moisture and slow future moss or mould growth. A rose head watering can, low pressure sprayer or broom are suitable for application.
